Bulg. Hunt - Peculiarities of the national hunt
First SKA fest on Balkans!Blue Box, Sofia21.08.2008.The positive thing is that last month it took place the very first ska fest on Balkans – Summer SKA Fest Even though ska music originated in Jamaica back in the 60’s and nowadays is a major music genre it seems hardly reaching Balkan Peninsula ass a whole. With pretty few ska and ska punk bands in the region it damn seems like an underdeveloped scene… which unfortunately barely surprises anybody. And besides the existence of real quality bands like the outstanding Macedonian Superhiks and the Bulgarian Wickeda, the region still has long way to go… or lets say, start going at least?
The positive thing is that last month it took place the very first ska fest on Balkans – Summer SKA Fest, which happened in the brand new club Blue Box in Sofia on 17th of Jully. Bringing on stage more chilled and traditional reggae ska bands, dub and ska punk bands created a truelly interesting and intriguing event with audience that was everything but apathic: joy, smiles, beer, moshing, stage diving and mad skanking are barely a part of the words to describe the fest’s atmosphere.
The event was organized by HC Spirit together with SKD Sound with the support of Fred Perry, in-line skating shop Vertigo, Globe, Battery, OCB, Madcap, Kom, Atticus and Backyard. Its contribution gave also the only ska record label in Bulgaria, the DIY label SKA-LP Records. In total nine bands from five different countries formed the line up of the festive day: Sofia Ska Skins (Bulgaria)
Over 500 people came to see the fest, which unfortunately was pretty much less than what everybody expected and even though they all were true affiliates and enjoyed the event at their utmost, their number just comes to show once again the underdeveloped ska scene we have. Soon after the event a rumor spread the besides the primary idea of having the fest on an annual basis, most probably there will not be one next year. HC Spirit commented on that that the low attendance definitely cooled off the “future organizational enthusiasm”, but staid positive with a promise for further attempts of organizing similar events.
